An Excellent Community is all about having Excellent Teachers and Excellent Schools.
Seeking ways to engage the community in support of local schools and public education is a major focus of the work of the Alliance. Through awareness events such as the Walk For Education we seek to raise up the importance of support for our local school systems. Through our work with PTA's we seek to insure all schools have an active parent and guardian network who are engaged at the local level working with their schools. Our work has also led us to become a leading advocate for quality learning environments, and as such we have become active leaders in pushing for new and improved school facilities. Helping rally people to the cause of public education involves working with all parties in our community.
Community support also involves seeking ways to make the public aware of the learning that is going on and to highlight the work of our outstanding students in the community. The Alliance has sought to encourage Summer Reading Programs and worked to support Back-To-School supply and uniform efforts. We also actively seek to support academic and arts programs that build on showcasing our young talent.
A prime example of our desire to focus on student achievement is our sponsorship of the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee. Working with The Times, the Alliance has sought to upgrade and promote the local version of the National Spelling Bee now seen on ESPN & ABC TV. We pay the entry fee for all public schools that will hold a school site Spelling Bee and send a School Winner to the Regional Bee held on the campus of LSU in Shreveport in February of each year.
